About Me
Hello! I’m Claire Clancy, a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, a prospective educator, and a lifelong learner. I have been an active-duty naval officer for 15 years, and I am thrilled to announce that in August 2025, I will be stepping into a new role as a Permanent Military Instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy. I am excited to bring my experience and passion for teaching to the Academy, where I will teach English and mentor future naval officers during the final chapter of my military career.
Throughout my time in the Navy, I have served in a wide range of operational and joint assignments—from deployments at sea to strategic work with NATO in Italy and Norway. These experiences have shaped my approach to leadership and deepened my belief in the importance of critical thinking, cultural literacy, and communication skills—traits I hope to bring to my classroom every day.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the idea that education in the humanities is a keystone to good leadership. I aim to create an environment where students feel challenged, supported, and inspired to think deeply about literature, ethics, and the kind of leaders they hope to become.
When I am not wearing a uniform, you can find me outside – hiking, skiing, swimming, camping, or exploring new corners of the world. These activities not only bring me joy but also help me maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. My partner Niall and I are happiest in the mountains and try to get outside every day. I have two cats, May, who adventures with me frequently, and Inky, who enjoys her life as an indoor princess after living on the streets of Naples.
I try to bring curiosity, humor, and care into everything I do – in uniform and out.
